Our Moon United football competition winners

Back in the summer of 2023, we announced our latest campaign and competition (Moon United) to help broaden children’s understanding of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) via their passion points in a fun and educational way!

With eyes on the Women’s World Cup, the IET was looking to take football out of this world and working with a team of scientists and engineers, we figured out how humans could play football on the Moon in years to come. Pretty cool, right? 

So, we asked children aged 4 to 13 year olds to design the very first Moon United football kit – a specially designed and adapted kit for the lunar footballers of the future. With two age categories, the competition attracted over 500 entries from across the UK and following a competitive judging process, our winners have been chosen!

Moon United 4-7 age category winner

Seven-year-old Ishaani from Coventry won our 4-7 age category with her colourful space-themed design.

Ishaani hopes to one day play football on the Moon – and she’d take her little sister with her too.

Moon United 8-13 age category winner

Thirteen-year-old Erim, from Middlesex and winner of the 8-13 age category, incorporated engineering throughout her kit with the idea of a sweat collector – to collect sweat and turn it into reusable water as astronauts play.

Her design also included a nod to role model Mae Jemison – who was the first African American woman to go to the Moon. 


We’d like to thank all the children who took part in our competition - all your ideas were truly creative and inspiring to look through and most importantly, we hope you had lots of fun designing them.

What was the football competition about?

With eyes on the England Lionesses over the summer, the IET was looking to take football out of this world. A team of scientists and engineers have figured out how humans could play football on the Moon in years to come. Pretty cool, right?  

To make sure the first Moon football team looks the part, we asked kids to use their skills, creativity, and imagination to design a football kit that's literally out of this world.

Primary school resources 

Primary school-aged learners can design an astronauts’ menu or create a foldable football goal, or maybe try their hand at designing a sports logo or even creating a podcast for a sporting event.

Secondary school resources

Secondary school-aged learners can design a football robot referee, sketch an idea for a wearable jetpack or design the trainers of the future!
