The STEM Squad and the Difference Makers Universe!

The comic sees the ‘STEM Squad’ – featuring famous British astronaut Tim Peake, Mums in Tech founder June Angelides MBE, presenter and STEM ambassador James Young, AKA Metal Gear Man and electronics design engineer Shrouk El-Attar – come together as a team to use their STEM superpowers to tackle a giant smog monster threatening to destroy one of the world’s biggest solar farms. How can they save the day? With the help of more engineers and scientists!

Our Super Realoes Competition

We launched a competition challenging children to design their own superhero gadget that can make a positive impact on the world around them or a piece of assistive technology that can improve someone’s life.

The competition entries were judged by our former IET president Danielle George, STEM Squad member James Young, mechanical engineer and report co-author Matt Dickinson and the comic book artists.

Our winner

Ten-year-old Harry from Newcastle blazed his way to glory with a ground-breaking fire-fighting invention, the Multi-Function Drone.

Fitted with a water hose to put out flames and filter systems to clean polluted air and extract smoke from fire sites, the innovative creation wowed judges with its potential to revolutionise disaster responses across the globe.

As part of his prize, world-renowned astronaut, Major Tim Peak presented Harry with a prototype of his invention in a surprise meeting.

He now joins Tim and a team of STEM pioneers as the latest member of the STEM Squad in the ‘DM Universe’ comic strip!
